"The Chicago Summit: February 24, 1966"
This rare photograph captures one of the most suppressed moments in Black liberation history - the five-hour private meeting between Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and The Honorable Elijah Muhammad on February 24, 1966.
What mainstream history won't tell you is that this wasn't just a courtesy call. King, increasingly disillusioned with the limitations of integration and the persistent economic oppression of Black Americans, sought wisdom from the man who had been building Black economic independence for decades. Muhammad's teachings on Black self-reliance, economic nationalism, and the psychological damage of seeking acceptance from oppressors resonated with King's evolving consciousness.
After this meeting, King's message notably shifted. His focus moved from lunch counter integration to economic empowerment, from seeking acceptance to demanding justice. The sanitized version of King presented in schools carefully omits how he began questioning capitalism itself and advocating for the very economic separation that Muhammad had preached for years.
Both men understood what the establishment feared most: unified Black consciousness transcending ideological differences. This photograph represents the moment two streams of Black thought - integration and separation - recognized their common enemy and shared destiny.
