This haunting photograph captures six-year-old Ruby Bridges on November 14, 1960, as she became the first African American child to attend formerly whites-only William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans, flanked by four federal marshals who were her only protection against violent white supremacist mobs.

What the sanitized textbook version won't tell you is the sheer brutality this child faced. A riotous white mob organized by the local White Citizens' Council gathered to protest her arrival, screaming hateful slurs, threats, and insult. For months, crowds chanting racial slurs and making death threats continued to greet Bridges as she walked this same path daily.

The federal government wasn't acting out of moral conviction - they were forced into action. Though the Brown v. Board decision was finalized in 1954, southern states were extremely resistant to the decision, and state governments were not doing their part in enforcing the new laws . It took six years of defiance before federal marshals finally escorted children into schools at gunpoint.

Bridge's father was fired from his job, and her sharecropper grandparents were kicked off of their land - the economic terrorism that white communities used to punish Black families who dared challenge the system. This wasn't just about education; it was about maintaining a racial caste system through violence and intimidation.

This photograph shows the true face of American "democracy" - a six-year-old child needing armed federal protection just to attend first grade, walking through crowds of adults screaming for her blood.
